"ICE" at the Gaylord Texan

For the Kindergarten field trip we went to the Gaylord Texan for their ICE exhibit.

Imagine a 14,000 square foot structure, kept at 9 degrees, filled with two million pounds of hand-carved ICE! The ice will be carved into magical life-sized holiday monuments and sculptures by artisans from Harbin China.

Amazing!! Since it is 9 degrees they give you warm coats to wear. They worked pretty good but I needed a ski mask for my nose and face.

For the money, I thought there would be more, but I think they focused on quality, not quantity.

They had cute, rocking and roaring, and sliding!

They had the whole nativity scene including the Wise Men. And a Texan Santa you can see in my header.

I am leaving out quite a bit, so many pictures.... To put in a plug for the Gaylord's, they also have similar displays at their locations in Nashville, TN and Kissimmee, FL. Make the trip if you are close.

I have some other pictures that I will be using for my blog designs for wintery themes.

Last Last Two Games that we won't mention by name

We lost our last two games this season. One was to Kansas State, the last was to A&M. Why did we lose? I don't know. We sucked and we should have won. I don't like it when we lose. Football ceases to exist after a loss. It is not to be talked about. I usually get in about 5 minutes to get my husband's take on the way we played, but after that - nada. Nothing.

I have a friend with a husband just like mine. We talked after the first loss and even though I was downstairs and my husband was upstairs, I still whispered into the phone "How was it after the game?"

"You know better than to ask me that question!"

"I know, I know, but I just wanted to hear someone else went through the same thing."

We did have fun around the Aggie game. It was in Austin the day after Thanksgiving. My friend from above and her husband flew in from Pennsylvania. They had a great turkey meal with our family instead of eating at some Mexican restaurant. We drove down, they stocked up on Texas gear, found tickets to the game, and luckily we found many things to talk about on the drive home that was not related to Texas football. Friend's hubby is a great story teller and loves Texas football about the same as my husband. I am glad they came to visit with us and can't wait until the next time.

We may get to a Bowl Game but will not be attending. To quote my husband after the loss to the Aggies, "This season is over for me."

The drama has changed....

Has this promotion changed?

Amazon says: Yes. Due to the incredible volume of traffic stemming from the popularity of this feature, we have made some changes to Amazon Customers Vote.

What I would have said: Yes, Due to the incredible volume of whining, we have made some changes to Amazon Customers Vote.

Now it is a lottery. You vote, you will be randomly picked to buy the item within the 24 hour buying period.

Now they will whine about not getting picked. And how it is rigged. It can't be random!!!!

Central to thinking

After reading the whole article, I am going to quote the same sections as other bloggers. But by the time I reached this section, my mouth did not have that much farther to drop. This is part of an interview by Pierre Heumann of the Swiss weekly "Die Weltwoche" with Al-Jazeera Editor-in-Chief Ahmed Sheikh.

Who is responsible for the situation?

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most important reasons why these crises and problems continue to simmer. The day when Israel was founded created the basis for our problems. The West should finally come to understand this. Everything would be much calmer if the Palestinians were given their rights.

Do you mean to say that if Israel did not exist, there would suddenly be democracy in Egypt, that the schools in Morocco would be better, that the public clinics in Jordan would function better?

I think so.

Can you please explain to me what the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has to do with these problems?

The Palestinian cause is central for Arab thinking.

In the end, is it a matter of feelings of self-esteem?

Exactly. It's because we always lose to Israel. It gnaws at the people in the Middle East that such a small country as Israel, with only about 7 million inhabitants, can defeat the Arab nation with its 350 million. That hurts our collective ego. The Palestinian problem is in the genes of every Arab. The West's problem is that it does not understand this.

Online Shopping Tips Continued

Sissy from "And What Next" has posted five tips for online shopping. I would like to add some of my own to that list....

Tip 6: Visit The Bargainist. They post current sales, coupons, freebies. I have been visiting this site for about two weeks and they have done well. That is how I found out about this. Another similiar site is ZeroDayDeals.com.

Tip 7: Shop through YUB.com. It is like getting reward points on your credit card without the credit card. You shop for stuff and if you buy something through the YUB.com link you earn points that can be used later. And it is not for lame retailers. They work with Target, CompUSA, HomeDepot, Dell, Apple and many more. I don't buy stuff just because I can through YUB, but if I was planning on spending the money anyway, might as well get some back.

Tip 8: Woot and Shnoop! These are sites that are pretty close in concept. They both put items up for sale for limited times and good prices. Even if you never buy anything, the decriptions from WOOT.com are funny. And Shnoop has good videos.

Tip 9: Amazon.com is offering more products from other retailers. This brings you a better selection and lower prices. Can't beat that!!!!

Tip 10: If you are looking to buy something you know little or nothing about, visit Epinions.com. You can find reviews for products from normal people. You may not be able to find them on the exact model, but you can look for similiar models to get a good idea.

Tip 10: Keep your eye on the shipping costs. This is where some retailers and e-bayers get you. Even with the cheaper prices it could still cost you more than what you can buy it for at your local store. Even if gas prices are high....

Tip 12: E-mail me with what you are looking for. I love to hunt down for the best deal. Really!!!

Crafty

One of the things I have not posted about is my somewhat recent interest in domesticated thangs. Recent being within the last year or so. I have learned crochet from my Mom and I am still learning sewing from my anti-MIL. I had thought about these things in the past, but never got to them and was never really interested.

My most recent project was made on Sunday. I took some old Texas t-shirts and made a "Game-day" purse. All in all it turned out pretty good and I will get better with the next one. I don't think it is deep enough. And I will go with the original pattern and use two different colored t-shirts.

My oldest was my model.

I found the patterns in this book (borrowed from my anti-MIL) and will be making more from it.

I'm a hugger, she's a hugger, are you a hugger too?

The 2006 Weblog Awards are going on. I had not voted until today and found the new category of "Video of the Year". The finalists are entertaining and I had seen a few and found some new ones.

I ended up voting for this one.

Update: I found this and this.

"I Pledge"

Through the mailing list of Marla, aka FlyLady, she sent this letter:

Marla,

I wanted to tell you and my family of new friends about something very important that happened to me. My good friend and Lead Guitarist, Jim Sevy came to me about a song the other day. He is one of the nicest people and most patriotic people I have ever met. We love having him in our band and I hope all of you get to meet him someday.

He was a little down and decided to go out for a jog one morning. He had heard that our troops were getting a little depressed and it really made him feel bad. Even when he was telling me about this he got all choked up. He decided we needed to do something for our troops for Christmas.

Jim wrote a very awesome and heart felt song called "I Pledge". He brought me the lyrics and a scratch track to play around with. I spent some time working with the song and went to a local studio where we put it together. We are going to offer it as a free download until January 31 2007.

We want nothing more than to get this song to all of the Troops everywhere. Anyone who will or who has ever served, and anyone who has had family serving. This song is for everyone and anyone who wants to show their support.

Sheplers Western Wear and apparel has also wanted to show their support. They are offering a 20% OFF coupon for online sales to anyone interested in helping get this song out there. www.sheplers.com and the coupon code can be found on the download page for "I Pledge". This coupon also expires January 31,2007.

All of you have been truly amazing to me and have made me feel so welcomed into your family. God Bless our Troops, and God Bless all of you.

Thank you again!

Eric Dodge

The link to the free download is here.

The song is great and worth a listen.

The Last Gift

I am up today to get to Toys-R-Us to find my youngest a teddy bear. I did not overhear this desire when she was talking to Santa since we did not visit him this year. No, I overheard at the dentist when her hygenist asked her what she wanted.

Wal-mart has let me down. No stuffed animals. So off I go to take advantage of Toy-R-Us's early hours. Wish me luck!!!

Mooooooon Sand!

Yesterday we celebrated Oldest's 7th birthday. She had her ears pierced on Friday and showed them off at the party. We meet at THE best Mexican restaurant in town. I think she picked it mostly because she wanted the waitstaff to sing to her and "make" her dance. We invited some families with kids in her class. And all of our families made it. After lunch we went to our house for ice cream cake. Yum! The present she was the most excited about was my least favorite.

Moon Sand. OMG! She begged to play with it that day.

"No, it is to messy."

"It does not say that in the commercial. It is like the beach without the mess."

"I don't think so."

Then later the commercial was on and she made sure I heard the part talking about no mess.

Soooo..... yesterday I let her play with it. We started out with both the girls. They were fighting over it. So I let Oldest play for 10 minutes and I used the timer. Then Youngest went for 10 minutes.

I have to admit that it was easier to cleanup than Play-doh. At least you can sweep up the sand, while Play-doh sticks to everything. As long as they don't play with it to long, the mess should be reasonable.

Whew!

One of My Many Gifts (Lucky chic, am I!)

(Post inspired by justdotchristina)

We have been using my parents old Corel and some of Mark's old dishes. Knowing that Mark would like to have a say in what we got, I asked for some new dishes with a general theme of blue. Then he could make the final choice and we would all be happy. He ended up picking my favorite that goes with my kitchen decor even better than I thought.

We started with a white tile back splash with little blue accent tiles. With the help of my antiMIL, she helped me with some pepper canisters with a trim to match the tile.

The dishes we chose match with the blue fade theme, don't you think?

Target

I had been working on a post about not shopping at Target, prompted by a post on Rocket Jones's blog about this article.

Target, the retailer that distinguished itself last year by banning Salvation Army bell-ringers, has topped itself this yuletide by selling Che Guevara CD cases for a little tyrant-chic right under your tree.

Target ended up pulling the cd's off the shelf.

Then my Anti-MIL told me that there is a lawsuit filed by Williams Sonoma against Target for stealing product designs.

Williams-Sonoma Inc., which operates Pottery Barn and other chains, claims in a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday that a quilted Christmas stocking sold at Target stores contains "every distinctive element of Pottery Barn Christmas stockings," right down to the snowflakes and blue sky.

More pointedly, the company says the stocking infringement is part of a "longstanding pattern of copying by Target of (Williams-Sonoma) designs for rugs, linens, tableware, furniture, lamps and other products."

I even found some evidence of similiarities here and here.

I was going to leave my post with that, but then I read about CalTechGirl's return experience. OMG!!!

Without a receipt they place SERIOUS restrictions on what you can get for a return. AND if it's over $100, good luck sucker. The lady next to me at the return counter was returning a PSP someone gave her son. They told her that they couldn't even take it.

Even worse was the father whose son had received a jacket he really liked but was too small. The kid wanted the same jacket, but this store didn't have his size EITHER. They couldn't give him a gift card to go to the other Target in town and get one. AND the jacket had already gone back to the floor while he was shopping, so they wouldn't give it back to him and void the return. When I left he was warming up to get as pissed off as I was.

And Beth gives us her two cents.

My take? I won't be shopping at Target. I am choosing to spend my money elsewhere. The sacrafice is small since I don't shop there much. Their prices for groceries are not competive and the selection is not that great. I do like their clothes, but I can find items I like at other stores. If someone I know is registered there? I can find them something at another store. No more Target for me.

Apples to Apples

Tonight we played Apples to Apples Junior. The girls received it as a gift for Christmas. In this game everyone gets 5 red apple cards, then one person as a judge picks a green apple card. Everyone else has to choose on of their cards that they think the judge will pick as the closest to the green card on the table. For example, the green card could be painful. Red cards closely matching this might be "Getting stitches", "a broken leg", or "high heels". The red cards go from fictional characters, famous people, things you do, to everyday items.

One of the green cards picked was "Frightening". My husband put down "Mary Kate and Ashley".

Another was "Mysterious". Husband was the judge. I picked "Hammer Head Sharks". I can't remember what my oldest picked. I peeked at Youngest's cards to help her out. I pointed to one and said "You WILL win with this one. Especially since your Dad is the judge!"

She put down "Girlfriends".

Bou has some gaming fun also!

My New Job

I have worked for 9 years at the same company. In those nine years I have moved up, around, down, and over. I am on my 3rd direct boss, 4th Boss's boss, 5th job title, and 6th cubicle/office location. I am not telling you this in complaint. This is a good thing. I love new and different.

I accepted my current position of less than a month, knowing I could do it, but unsure if I would like it. Would it be a challenge long term? Would I master it in 6 months?

It has taken a full month to transition my past duties over to others. Until the last two weeks, I have had little time for any focus on my new job. But in these two weeks my concerns are gone.

With any job you take your past experiences and apply them to your new ones. My experience in computer support gives me an alignment with the business, knowledge of people and personalities, and a reputation with a distinct advantage to succeed. (Sorry to sound so resume-ish, but I can't think of another way to say it. Maybe I could have just said "I kick a$$!)

What amazes me is my experience on this blog and helping others relates directly to my new job. As a Technical Trainer, I will be putting together course work with a tool that is very similiar to all the blogging software. My boss and I want to jazz up the layouts, graphics, and formating. Just like all the blog designs I have helped with. And the documentation? My "Blog Basics" series is a mini course on blogging. All these things have been a small taste of what I will be doing on my new job!

I will have challenges. Deadlines to meet, new software to learn and master, and improvements to be made on everything, including my training skills.

I wish I could convey my excitement. I will no longer have to do after-hour support, dealing with problems will not be my primary focus, and I get my own office! Happy dance and a great way to start the New Year!!!!
