August Happiness Challenge Day 30 and 31

A little late, but it's all good. Yep - all good!

My parents moved up here for good on the 31st. Woo hooooo!

I took a vacation day on the 31st. We kept with tradition and went to Austin to shop for our burnt orange gear. We went to a party and had dinner at Katz's. Yum and fun!

Still here...

It has been busy here, so I am behind on my football posts. I still need to do a game summary of both games. I missed the pre-game summary for TCU, but I will wait and do that before next years game.

My husband has me hooked on a series of books by Terry Goodkind. I finished book three, but will not continue until I get some things done here and at home. I have a bad addiction to reading and will not put a book down until it is done. Bah!

Game 1 and 2 Summary

GAME 1: Texas 21, Arkansas State 13

We did not play well this game. Colt did not do well and pretty much everyone else struggled. The Refs called pass interference on us a few times, but no one could figure out why. I hope someone talked to him after.

GAME 2: Texas 34, TCU 13

Based on how we played last week, the mood by my husband and other die hard fans was very somber. Everyone was concerned that we would lose. And until the 3rd quarter, I thought we would. At the half TCU was beating us 10 - 0. Texas eventually wore out TCU and won.

I was glad we won and would have been razzed at work on Monday.

More on the new parking situation coming.....

Opponent Summary - University of Central Florida

I meant to finish this entry before Saturday's game. Texas played the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida.

Again, there was not much info about UCF, but I found a great fan site and they gave me the information I was missing. Thanks to Jason of UCFPride.com.

Here is the summary:

Mascot:
Knights. I love their play on words with the main mascot named Knightro. He even has a horse named KnightMare.

Colors:
Gold and Black

Location:
Orlando, Florida

Here is Jason's information! As you can see, I did not have to do much!

Who is your main rival and what is the history of that?

This would absolutely have to be USF (Univ of South Florida) as they are only 100 miles from our campus. We've only played them twice now in football as they just started their football program recently and ducked us for years until finally agreeing to start the series a few years ago. The games in Orlando and Tampa both drew over 45,000 fans making them some of the highest attended games in either school's short histories. All Knights hate Bulls and the feeling is very much mutual, although recently Bulls fans try to act above us now that they are in the BCS with the Big East. That just makes the hatred worse!

What unique traditions do you have?
Traditions are something we still need a lot of work on as our school and football program are so young. Also it is hard to build traditions playing your football games 15 miles from campus. Having an on campus stadium should really help us to build those traditions that are such a great part of college football. I will say that one thing we do have a great tradition of is tailgating. Many opposing fans are shocked at the tailgating scene our school has for each and every game. Lots start filling at 7am even for the night games and the tailgating setups are quite elaborate. I've traveled to many road games to many big schools and I'd say UCF holds it's own pretty well in that department. George O'Leary's big thing this year has been to talk about starting the most important tradition in college football, and that is WINNING! We're happy to hear that...

I know you have lots of favorite players, but who is your favorite and why?

My favorite current player has to be Junior running back Kevin Smith. He currently is the nation's leading per game rusher after his 217 yard performance against NC State and I look for him to have yet another great season. As a freshman in 2005 he rushed for over 1,100 yards helping us to our program's first ever bowl game, a game in which he rushed for 202 yards. Beyond all the stats though I like him off the field as well. Some may consider him a little rough around the edges and rugged, but he couldn't nicer to all Knight fans whenever they come up to him. He's confident and has a certain cockiness to him that players need, but yet doesn't have an ego. He always puts the team first above himself and is a true leader. He absolutely bleeds black and gold, he loves the school and we love him. He will be playing on Sundays and I will be a lifelong fan.

How have you been playing so far this season?
We've only had one game so far this season and that was a 25-23 road victory against the NC State Wolfpack. The game was a tale of two halves as UCF flat out dominated NC State in all phases of the game in the 1st half, going into the break up 25-3. However the roles were somewhat reversed in the 2nd half as the Wolfpack scored 20 unanswered points. UCF struggled to move the ball in the 3rd quarter and had five straight three-and-outs which caused the defense (that had been playing stellar) to be on the field way to long and it showed. Our QB had a couple of passes that he just flat out missed which would have been sure touchdowns, so if we can get that corrected then I think we're going to have a good offense this year. The defense I have no doubt will be the best we've seen in the O'Leary era.

Is there anything else that would be of interest?
Saturday will be like a dream they never thought would come true to the many diehard UCF fans that like myself have been going to games since the days of Division II and playing the likes of Valdosta State in the Citrus Bowl. So to be playing the Texas Longhorns on our very own on campus stadium will create emotions probably much like how many of your fans felt the first time they watch the Longhorns play for a National Title. The forecast calls for 30% change of showers on Saturday, but there will be just about a 100% chance of man tears when the Knights run out of the stadium tunnel, home at last for the first time.

We watched the game at home and again Texas struggled to win. Central Florida played a good game. I wish we could have been there. Thanks to Jason for the info!!

Opponent Summary - Rice

Texas will play Rice University in Austin on Saturday.

Here is the summary:

Mascot:
Owls. Their main mascot has been named Sammy. The story goes like this:
An early symbol of Rice's athletic teams was large canvas owl, a tempting target for the Institute's rivals. In 1917, when students from Southwest Conference football rival Texas A&M kidnapped the owl, Rice students pooled their resources and hired a private detective to go to College Station to find the missing mascot. When the detective, having recovered the owl, sent a coded telegram to Houston that read "Sammy is fairly well and would like to see his parents at eleven o'clock," the Rice mascot had a name. - pulled from RiceOwls.com

Colors:
Blue and Grey

In 1912, Rice's first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, chose as the school colors "a blue still deeper than the Oxford blue" and "the Confederate gray, enlivened by a tinge of lavender." It has been suggested that blue and gray were chosen in recognition of the fact that Rice's founder amassed much of the fortune that formed the initial endowment of the Rice Institute by trading with both the North and the South during the Civil War.

Location:
Houston, Texas

Main rival

The only reference I can find is A&M. Maybe because of this story.

Unique traditions

Rice has The MOB.

Mini-Cheerleaders

This year the girls are Mini-Cheerleaders at their school. It is very small and goes up to High School. They are cheering in the first quarter and having a good ole' time. Luckily they have the support of both sets of Grandparent's since they are taking them while we are out of town for the Texas games. I think they all have fun so it is a win-win!.

Here is a picture of them showing spirit on their cheeks.

Texas beats Rice - 58 to 14

We knew this game would be a blow out, but mostly we looked forward to watching the MOB. We all figured they would make fun of all the arrests we have had and they did. They also made fun of the Aggies and Michael Vick. Something about no longer outsourcing their mascot dog's training to him.

The game went well and we were able to bring in the second and third string. I think most people around me enjoyed it. They liked seeing the newer players and their talent.

I have made it through many seasons and even was pregnate during two. I was able to make it to all the games and remember only one that I struggled at. I was 8 months prego and had to walk up a ramp about 3 stories high. This last game was almost as hard for me. I have Plantar Fasciitis (self diagnosed, but I am 99.999% sure based on what I read). I think it is starting to affect all of my walking. I felt like I was walking in slow motion and could not keep up with my husband. So after we made it to our second tailgate, I left early so I could take my time. Then I left the game early to head back to the car. Now everyday walking I am fine and I was fine walking on my own. But with a very tall husband - I have to take 3 steps for every one of his if he is in a hurry. And that day he was. Bleh!

I am guilty of using Alternative Methods

On the show "The Dog Whisperer", Cesar uses a certain method to work with dogs. If they are not doing what he likes he makes a "TCHHH" noise and taps them. The idea is the touch takes them out of the current state of mind and the noise reinforces it. It works for him.

My daughters and I used to watch the show on a regular basis. They know his methods and are aware of the noise he makes and touch. During the time where were watching it, my youngest was having a crying fit. So much that she could not hear me or would not hear me. So in my frustration I tapped her and made the noise.

She immediately stopped and I immediately started laughing. Her mouth started quivering while she tried not to smile. She did not want to give in. But it worked. She was still upset about whatever it was, but not as much and I was able to talk to her.

Looks like Dooce is considering this method for her daughter. But the bigger question is "How do you spell the noise Cesar makes?" She says "TCHHH". I think he has more of an "S" sound. Or maybe he is saying "SSSSt", but with his accent it comes out "TCHHH". Help me out here - go to this link and click on the clip for "Boo" (last clip in the green box). He uses the sound in it.

OK - I listened again and it is a TCHHH sound. It is a good thing no one is around wondering why I keep making the TCHHH sound over and over.

Either way - I will keep this tool in my arsenal for when the girls really need it.
