Ratatouille

Saturday night my husband took us girls to the movies. It was a pleasant surprise in two ways. First, we had no idea where he was taking us. And second, Ratatouille was a good movie. But I should have known it would be a good movie since Pixar was involved.

This movie had my attention pretty much from the beginning. The animation was wonderful, the story was good, and it had a happy ending. If you are lover of cooking, underdograts, love stories, friendship, family, and laughing - go see it! Even the kids will like it.

We left at 3:30, really!

Tuesday as my friend and I left work, we looked forward to getting home early. But that was not to be. We should have been home by 4:30, but instead at 4:30 we were at the half way point because of a truck fire and rubber neckers. We did not get through that until 5pm.

Still enough time to get the girls before the daycare closes at 6pm. And luckily the big bad storm passed by us. We could see the dark clouds.

Then we get to a major intersection about 5 minutes from my house. It is backed up. So we take an alternate route that ends up taking to long for me to get my car from my friends and get to the daycare before it closes. So my friend agrees to go straight to the daycare.

On the way we cross over 10 areas of the road that are covered with water. Rushing water. The storm that we missed did not miss the route we were taking. The rain had to have dumped buckets and since it has been raining so much it had no where to go. We saw some duplexes centimeters from flooding. Mini rivers coming off the side of the road.

We arrived at the daycare at 5:55. Whew! With the drive back to my friends house, then to Sonic, we were home at 6:30.

Rain is predicted for the next 7 days. Where will it go?

The Corps of Engineers is watching:

"The lakes on the Trinity continue to rise. The Corps is not making any releases at the present time except for Ray Roberts and Lewisville Lakes, two projects that have risen into the surcharge pool. Releases are being delayed due to high flows on the main stem of the Trinity River. Rains Tuesday afternoon will hold up flows at Dallas somewhat longer. The flow over the spillway at Lewisville will increase as the Elm Fork watershed drains.

In the Brazos watershed, the high flows from Possum Kingdom Lake have caused the level at Whitney Lake to rise to elevation 556 feet. Whitney is expected to rise to elevation 560 feet (27 feet above normal) by the weekend. The high lake level has forced the closing of several bridges at the upper end of the lake. Currently, there is approximately 32,000 cubic feet per second of floodwater flowing in the Brazos River through the city of Waco due to discharges from Whitney, Waco and Aquilla Lakes. One cubic foot of water is equal to 7.48 gallons so this equates to 14 million gallons of water per minute.

This high flow may continue for several weeks in order to lower these lakes.

From 1919....

NEW YORK, Jan. 6.; What was the last public statement by Col. Roosevelt was read last night at an "All-American concert" here under the auspices of the American Defense society, of which he was honorary president.

"I cannot be with you and so all I can do is to wish you Godspeed," it read. "There may be no sagging back in the fight for Americanism merely because the war is over.

There are plenty of persons who have already made the assertion that they believe the American people have a short memory and that they intend to revive all the foreign associations which more directly interfere with the complete Americanization of our people. Our principle in this matter should be absolutely simple.

In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American.

If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American.

We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, and American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul [sic] loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt wrote this in a letter to the American Defence Society. More info here.

Hat tip to my anti-MIL who sent me the email that prompted the googling....

Blog Design Series Continued

About a year ago, I started a series of post on Blog Design. My intention was to share what I have learned about HTML and CSS. Since my last entry in February, life got in the way. Blog-City changed their blogging format, so I was tweaking the design there under their new system. Now that is done, I have posted the next entry.

If you want to start at the beginning, click here.

If you want the current post, click here.

Also, if you have any questions you want answered, email me or leave a comment.

At home....

I was at home Friday while the AC guys repair the drain pan under our AC unit. Over a year ago it rusted out since it was not installed properly. We were able to put up a work around that got us by till now. We have had two people look at it and tell us that our unit was not installed very well. The main drain has been clogged up since the start. The second unit is not draining right either.

The company we are using is great. Everyone is friendly. Their prices are reasonable. They have kept me up to date on the status by calling when they said and calling when they did not have to. They worked with my work schedule and were honest about their constraints. So if you ever need AC, Heating, or major appliance service and you are in the Fort Worth area, give Flint Service Co. a call.*

Almost Delivery

PA_DiGiorno_Ultimate.jpg Last week I picked up a new type of pizza from DiGiorno. We like their pizza well enough to eat it on a regular basis, but I never thought is "was delivery." But they are very close with their newest type. Ultimate Pizzaria. Four Meat. Pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, and bacon. Crust was great. Not thick and not a flat thin. It looked like they had layered it. We usually have at least 5 pieces left over, but that night only 1.

Their website needs to be updated. All they have is a picture with coming soon on it.

North Texas Lakes

A co-worker showed me the pictures from the link below. He pointed out the trees all the way under the water, buildings under the water, some almost with the roof sticking out. He has a boat that he can't get to. When you look at the marina pictures, notice the telephone poles and how little is sticking out.

Check it out here.

Spoiling Movies

A post from Harvey reminds me of a story.

When I was in high school, I went to see "Beaches" without my brother. There is a scene where the lady that died fell off her bed and the cat comes up and sniffs her and sad music plays. But that is not what I told my brother.

I told him that she fell off the bed and died. No one found her for a couple of days and when the cat came to sniff her, she blew up all over the room. Blood and guts and everything. He was surprised and I told him that I was also since it was such a chic movie or something like that.

I must have done a great job of not smiling since almost 6 years later he told me he watched the movie. He was waiting for the chic to blow up all smuggly since he knew about it and others watching it with him didn't. He was disappointed. And I got a laugh.

Calling all Military Brats

Want to help Leslie with her dissertation? She is asking the following questions of students who attended DoD schools:

1) Why do they do so well on standardized tests compared to their public school counterparts in the States; and
2) Why are racial gaps in test score performance smaller (particularly in the schools overseas).

More details on helping her out here.

Debt Management Tips

My husband has always said that you would be better off burning your money instead of buying a lottery ticket. So when I found this I sent it his way. Make sure you read the third item under the Tips section.

He came back with a clip found here.

Is saving money one of those things that are just to good to be true?

Quote Of The Day

Experts believe that if only the group can sneak in a few more slightly rude things about authoritarian rulers into newspapers, then brutal dictatorships will never be a problem ever again.

New Light Over My Sink

My Dad consulted today while I installed a new track light fixture over my kitchen sink. I also had some assistance from my girls.

The main reason I bought it was to eliminate the need for a lamp in the living room. Huh?
