I found a theme with people's take on the Super Bowl. My count is three, but there may be more out there.
"The Star-Spangled Banner isn't up for creative interpretation. But holding notes that shouldn't be held, changing chords, and throwing in a bunch of runs, you take away from the song and bring attention to yourself. That is not the point of the Star-Spangled Banner."
Sissy says:
The rest is here.
"Okay, the officiating was something awful, but I do believe the WORST thing about the Superbowl was the rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by Aretha Franklin and Aaron Neville. I was watching the game with four other people and most thought it would go down in history as the WORST ever, most hideous, national anthem sung at a Superbowl."
TNT agrees:
More here..
"I am certain that they could've found better talent to do the National Anthem, people who can read music, follow a beat, choose the correct time and tempo. Don't get started on "Artistic License" and "arrangement." The song should only be sung one way: so that the crowd can join in. It's MY National Anthem. It's OUR National Anthem. "
And Chuck.....
More on this and the Super Bowl here.
My take? I LOVE singing along with the National Anthem. Take that away and you just ruin it. At the NFC Championship they had the last American Idol chic sing. She did it the right way. I can't remember who sang at the Rose Bowl, but I got goosebumps listening to everyone in the stands singing with them. That is the way it should be done.
